Young Boys and Slovan Bratislava will meet for a place in the third qualifying round of the Champions League on Wednesday evening. These sides played out a 0-0 draw in Slovakia last week, but which side will make it through to the next round?
Champions League Second Qualifying Round Preview
There will be big stakes in Switzerland on Wednesday, as Young Boys and Slovan Bratislava will be looking for the win that they need to reach the next round of the Champions League. The two sides played out a 0-0 draw in the opening fixture. Young Boys dominated the possession in that game, as they finished the match with 63% of the possession. However, they failed to create many clear cut opportunities as they registered just two shots on target.
With home advantage, they will be expecting to get over the line in the second leg, and have been in decent form over recent weeks. They picked up a win against Feyenoord and drew with Strasbourg in pre-season fixtures, before opening their domestic season with a 4-3 win against Luzern. Theoson Siebatcheu and Meshak Elia both scored two goals apiece in that win on the opening weekend.
Slovan Bratislava also opened their league campaign with a victory this past weekend, as they overcame Liptovsky Mikulas to win 4-1. Lukas Pauschek, Filip Lichy, Myteny Abena and Rafael Ratao scored the goals in the victory. Bratislava also overcame a tough fixture in the first qualifying round, as they narrowly edged past Shamrock Rovers with a 3-2 aggregate win. The most crucial goal in that tie was scored in a 2-1 defeat in the second leg, with Vladimir Weiss’ goal 20 minutes from time effectively sealing their place in this round of the competition.
Young Boys vs Slovan Bratislava Head to Head
Young Boys and Slovan Bratislava have met on three occasions in the past. However, Bratislava have never been able to beat the Swiss outfit. Before last week’s 0-0 draw, Young Boys had won the previous two meetings. They won 3-1 away from home in November 2014, and won in Switzerland against Bratislava 5-0 in September of the same year.
Young Boys vs Slovan Bratislava Prediction
Neither side wanted to lose the first leg, but there will be a different attitude on Wednesday. However, we struggle to see anything other than a win for the Swiss side, as they have the better quality in forward areas.
