UFC 259: Pros react to Petr Yan losing bantamweight title to Aljamain Sterling on a DQ

Fellow fighters react to Aljamain Sterling’s title win and Petr Yan’s DQ.

The highly-hyped UFC bantamweight title fight between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling ended in shocking fashion, as an intentional foul late in the fourth round resulted in Sterling becoming the new champion. It marks the first time a UFC title changed hands on a disqualification.

Undefeated in the Octagon coming into this fight, Yan quickly rose up the UFC’s bantamweight ranks, ultimately winning the then-vacant championship with a fifth-round TKO of Jose Aldo at UFC 251 in July.

Sterling, a seven-year UFC veteran, entered this fight on a five-fight win streak and with wins in seven of his last eight. He earned a bantamweight title shot by choking out Cory Sandhagen in just under 90 seconds at UFC 250 in June.

Sterling delivered pressure to Yan throughout the fight, but Yan’s defense was on point, landing several harder, crisper shots during the fight and scoring his own takedowns. Even as Sterling went for his takedowns, Yan used clinching and his impeccable takedown defense to prevent Sterling from getting the fight to the ground on his own fruition.

Yan, however, landed a knee on a grounded Sterling, causing Sterling to go down in pain and unable to get back to his feet. As a result, Sterling won the championship on a DQ.
