UFC 259: Jan Blachowicz calls Israel Adesanya his toughest opponent

Following his victory at UFC 259, Jan Blachowicz sat down with members of the media to discuss his victory.

Jan Blachowicz maintained his iron-clad control over the UFC light heavyweight division on Saturday night as he defeated Israel Adesanya via unanimous decision following the completion of the five-round main event at UFC 259. The win, dashed the hopes of Adesanya to become the fifth double champion in the history of the UFC.

Blachowicz had good things to say about his opponent commenting on how even with the size difference Adesanya was clearly one of the toughest guys he had ever faced inside the Octagon.

“One of the toughest opponents of my life,” Blachowicz told the media after the fight. “I am in great shape and he is one of the toughest opponents of my life.”

Although victorious Blachowicz admitted freely that the fight did not go to plan and that Adesanya was a much more challenging competitor than the 38-year-old fighter had initially anticipated.

“I thought before the fight that I planned to knock him out in the second round,” he said. “But he is a great fighter so he did not let me in. I started rushing him in the end but he is a great fighter so I could not catch him. He hit really hard. I feel it in my leg right now. I should have put more pressure on him and used more boxing on him. I was a little bit better. It was a close fight, finally, I found a way to take him down and throw him on the ground and win the fight, defend the belt for the first time in my life. What an amazing feeling.”

He also expressed relief that he had risen to the challenge in the post-fight press conference and was adamant that he would now be seen as a “true champion” in the division after defeating a massive presence in the UFC.

“What can I say. I’m just happy. Pure happiness, now that I have defended my belt. I have proved that I am a true champion. Now I am going to have respect from everybody.  With my next fight, I will not be an underdog anymore.”
