Rodolfo Vieira’s tank empties, leading to major Anthony Hernandez upset.
Just when it looked like it was going to a quick, easy victory for Rodolfo Vieira, fatigue set in and led to an amazing comeback by Anthony Hernandez, as “Fluffy” submitted the jiu-jitsu champion and handed Vieira his first MMA loss at UFC 258.
Hernandez was the biggest underdog on the card at 30-to-1 odds.
Anthony Hernandez secures major upset with submission of Rodolfo Vieira
The fight went to the ground in the opening seconds and dominated with top pressure, coming close to scoring a choke and an armbar, and continuing his control when the fight went against the cage.
After Hernandez nailed Vieira in the first round, however, Vieira looked rocked and severely gassed out, with his punches looking weak with no conviction. Hernandez unsuccessfully tried for a choke, and when it didn’t work, he was still able to easily stuff a takedown attempt by Vieira.
Vieira got little to no energy back as the second round started. Even as he countered a flying knee attempt and got on top, Hernandez easily shook him off.
It all led to an absolutely shocking ending to the fight, as Hernandez caught Vieira in a guillotine and forced a tap.
Hernandez, the former LFA middleweight champion, is now 2-2 in the UFC, rebounding from a loss to Kevin Holland in Jacksonville in May.
