Twins-Red Sox game postponed following police killing of Daunte Wright

The Minnesota Twins announced that Monday’s game against the Red Sox was being postponed after local police killed a 20-year old Black man.

As the trial for the police officer who killed George Floyd last year wages on, Minnesota is dealing with another murder at the hands of police.

On Sunday night, a Brooklyn Center police officer shot and killed a 20-year old Black man named Daunte Wright during a traffic stop.

At a press conference on Monday, police stated that the officer involved meant to pull her taser but instead pulled her handgun. The Brooklyn Center Police spokesperson went on record as saying he believed the shooting was accidental, and that the officer involved was “very senior”.

Minnesota was slated to play Boston at Target Field, which is located roughly 10 miles from Brooklyn Center in downtown Minneapolis. The Twins released a statement explaining the decision.

It’s unclear whether this will be the only game of the series to be postponed. Boston is in Minnesota for a four-game series against the Twins that ends on Thursday. Minnesota then begins a series against the Angels while the Red Sox immediately head home to begin a series against the White Sox.

This leaves no time in the immediate future for the game — or potentially games — to be played. In all likelihood, whatever games are missed will be made up later this summer.

As of now, neither the Twins nor the Red Sox have given an indication of when the game will be rescheduled.
