Popyrin Captures Maiden Title in Singapore; Goffin Claims Montpelier Crown; Cerundolo Wins Cordoba Title – Tennis Connected

Australian Alexei Popyrin captured his maiden ATP Tour title on Sunday in Singapore, defeating No. 4 seed Alexander Bublik 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Overcoming the loss of the first set, Popyrin used his hard-hitting game-style to upend his crafty opponent. Striking 11 aces and winning an impressive 94 percent of his first serve points, Popyrin broke Bublik’s serve on five occasions.

Never facing his opponent on Tour before, Popyrin also defeated Marin Cilic in the semifinals.

Bublik, who was attempting to win his first career title, fell to 0-4 in championship matches.

Open Sud de France—Montpellier, France

No. 2 seed David Goffin upended top seed Roberto Bautista Agut in Montpellier, France on Sunday, dispatching the Spaniard 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Using his guile and determination to prevail, Goffin won 65 percent of his second serve points and struck an impressive 13 aces. Never an easy out, Bautista Agut hit seven aces of his own and saved three break points.

Winning his first title on Tour since Tokyo, Japan in 2017, Goffin is currently ranked No. 15 in the world.

Bautista Agut, who was looking to claim his 10th career title, dismissed Ugo Humbert earlier in the event.

Cordoba Open—Cordoba, Argentina

Hometown hero Juan Manuel Cerundolo capped off a dream week in Cordoba, Argentina on Sunday, dispatching Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-0, 2-6, 6-2.

Needing one hour and 53 minutes to seal his victory, Cerundolo broke serve on five occasions and won 61 percent of his first serve points. Claiming his maiden ATP Tour title, Cerundolo also defeated No. 3 seed Miomir Kecmanovic earlier in the tournament.

Ranked No. 335 heading into the event, Cerundolo will jump to No. 181 on the computer on Monday.

Ramos-Vinolas, who was attempting to win his third career title, dispatched top seed Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinals.
