Oklahoma, Miami and Texas suffered brutal upsets last week while USC and Michigan got real scares. Now, it’s time for our Week 5 college football upset picks.

Through the first four weeks of the 2022 college football season, it’s felt like one week off, one week on when it comes to upsets. Weeks 1 and 3 were all but wholly tame in terms of the results but Weeks 2 and 4 brought a multitude of chaos, most recently with Oklahoma getting downed by Kansas State, Miami being stunned by Middle Tennessee State, and Texas falling to Texas Tech.

However, I don’t expect that pattern to continue has we move into Week 5. With conference matchups starting to heat up and multiple highly ranked teams facing their biggest challenges yet of the year, our college football upset picks for this week are preparing us for a quick return of the calamity that makes us love this sport so damn much.

There are plenty of other upsets that could potentially come from the likes of Kentucky-Ole Miss, Texas Tech-Kansas State, Oregon State-Utah and more. But these five teams are officially on alert as they’re our college football upset picks for Week 5.

College football upset picks for Week 5: 5 teams on upset alert

5. Michigan Wolverines

Opponent: at Iowa | Time: Saturday, Oct. 1, Noon ET | Spread: MICH -10.5

I was among the many who bought fully into Michigan after they blew out extremely weak competition in the first three games of the season and thought Jim Harbaugh’s team would dismantle Maryland in typical fashion for the Terps beginning Big Ten play. That, however, was not the case.

Granted, there is a ton of credit due to Maryland as that team might just be better than expected. But J.J. McCarthy was also far more imperfect than he had been previously, the defense gave up 27 points and struggled at times in coverage and now there are questions.

Iowa has been a punchline among college football fans this season because of an abhorrently bad offense that has only marginally improved. With that said, the defense remains one of the best in the country and the Hawkeyes have been giant-killers at Kinnick Stadium, accruing a 5-3 record in eight previous games against Top 5 opponents. That should be enough to put a scare into the Wolverines.
