Nate Diaz takes aim at ‘spoiled’ Conor McGregor in NSFW Twitter rant

Nate Diaz fires shots on 5-year anniversary of first fight with Conor McGregor

Five years later, and it’s the same old song and dance with Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor.

While March 5 in 2021 comes on the eve of a highly-hyped and anticipated UFC 259 card with three title fights, it also marks an important date in UFC history. This was the day in 2016 in which Diaz and McGregor met in the Octagon for the first time at UFC 196.

On anniversary of Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor 1, Diaz rips into potential McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier trilogy

On the day where UFC 259 competitors were weighing in, Chamatkar Sandhu of BT Sport was reflecting on McGregor’s appearance at the weigh-ins of UFC 196 and how different he looked compared to his run at featherweight. McGregor, who went on to become the first champ-champ in UFC history, quote tweeted “Done it all, still here” in response.

That tweet did not get past Diaz, and he fired away at McGregor in a reply, insinuating he should have been given the nod in their rematch about five months later at UFC 202.

Diaz also referenced McGregor’s pursuit of rematches following losses to redeem himself. In addition to rematching Diaz, McGregor had long petitioned for a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov following his submission loss to Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

Now following McGregor’s loss to Dustin Poirier, there’s a chance those two may rematch sometime in the future, potentially for the UFC lightweight championship (if this pursuit by UFC President Dana White to get Nurmagomedov out of retirement ever comes to an end soon).

Diaz added a shot at Poirier in his tweet, calling him “scared.” Diaz and Poirier were scheduled to face off at UFC 230 in what was supposed to be Diaz’s original return from the second fight with McGregor, but Poirier pulled out of the bout due to injury.

After McGregor’s loss to Poirier, it seemed like an opportune time to potentially, finally book the trilogy clash between Diaz and McGregor. That, however, seems more and more unlikely now with the potential of a trilogy bout between Poirier and McGregor instead.

Diaz submitted McGregor in upset fashion in the second round of their UFC 196 bout, only for McGregor to win the exciting and tightly contested rematch by majority decision.

A third fight has long been rumored and clamored for, but nothing has come of it. After UFC 202, Diaz was not seen in the Octagon again for three years. He returned at UFC 241 with a one-sided decision win over Anthony Pettis but lost via doctor’s stoppage TKO to Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244.

McGregor, meanwhile, went on to claim the lightweight championship at UFC 205 before taking a hiatus from MMA to pursue a boxing showdown with Floyd Mayweather. McGregor’s three Octagon appearances since then have seen him submitted by Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, finish Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in 40 seconds at UFC 246 and be finished by Poirier at UFC 257 (the latest of which marked the first time McGregor has been stopped via KO/TKO).
