Luka Doncic autograph rookie card sells for $4.6 million; sets record for basketball collectible

A one-of-its-kind Luka Doncic card sold this weekend for about the cost of an NBA lottery pick.

The card, a 1:1 Logoman autograph rookie from the 2018-19 Panini National Treasures set, went for $4.6 million in a private sale. That’s the highest known price paid for a basketball card, per The Action Network, and second overall for a sports card behind a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle that sold for $5.2 million.

The buyer is Nick Fiorella. The seller’s name has not been disclosed. Fellow collector Bolillo Lajan San announced Sunday on Instagram that he and Fiorella, his “new business partner/friend,” had “finalized” the sale.

Doncic, who turned 22 on Sunday, became an NBA All-Star for the second time in his three-year NBA career earlier in the month. He entered Sunday’s play averaging 28.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 9.0 assists.

His card’s price was more than half the $8.05 million he is making this season in the third year of his rookie contract, per Spotrac. Under the NBA’s rookie salary scale, Onyeka Okongwu, the seventh pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, is making $4.84 million in 2020-21.
