Jaguars returning to classic teal home uniforms (Video)

The Jaguars are ditching their black home unis in favor of a vintage look.

When Trevor Lawrence takes to TIAA Bank Field for his first home game as the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback, he will be sporting the teal uniforms the franchise made famous following its inception.

The Jaguars made the announcement they are switching from black back to teal as their home uniforms, confirming the change in a hype video featuring pass rusher Josh Allen that was released on Twitter on Wednesday.

The Jaguars are going back to teal

Head equipment manager Jimmy Luck said in a statement:

“We’ve heard the fans loud and clear. As the only team in the NFL that wears teal, we know what this color means to our organization, the 904 and our entire fanbase. Teal inspires great memories of some of our franchise’s greatest moments. Making the switch to teal as our primary uniform color allows us to celebrate that history while kicking off a new era of Jaguars football.”

Jacksonville has a 64-50 record wearing the teal uniforms, according to the team (h/t ESPN) and went 60-42 while sporting them during home games.

They are synonymous with the early days of the Jaguars franchise, which was born in 1995. Jacksonville made the playoffs in four of its first five seasons, including two runs to the AFC Championship Game, losing to the New England Patriots in the 1996 season and the Tennessee Titans in 1999.

Save for a return to the AFC Championship Game in the 2017 season, when they were undone by a Tom Brady-led Patriots comeback, the Jaguars have struggled to recapture those halcyon days.

But with Lawrence almost certainly set to be selected first overall by the Jaguars, the switch back to teal could further fuel optimism that good times are on the way again in Jacksonville.

The Jags have a long way to go before they can think about contending in the AFC, but nothing re-energizes a fanbase like a new franchise quarterback, and, come September, there will be plenty of teal Lawrence jerseys in the stands as Jacksonville begins its new era.
