Cristian Eriksen scored a stunning free kick in stoppage time as Internazionale rallied past AC Milan 2-1 in a bizarre Coppa Italia quarterfinal match that also saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic sent off following a tussle with Romelu Lukaku.
With a win over their fierce city rivals, Inter advance to the two-legged semifinals of the competition where they’ll face either Juventus or SPAL.
Milan seemed to be in control as Ibrahimovic scored at the half-hour mark, but the game’s intensity then took a dramatic turn. Right before halftime tempers flaired between ex-Manchester United teammates Ibrahimovic and Lukaku, with the players kept separated as the sides walked into the San Siro tunnel.
Both players received a yellow card for the confrontation, but Ibrahimovic then earned his second yellow card in the 58th minute for a sloppy tackle on Aleksandar Kolarov.
With 10 men for the rest of the match, the Rossoneri were unable to hold onto the lead after VAR confirmed that Nicolo Barella was brought down in the box by Rafael Leao in the 69th minute. Lukaku then stepped up to the spot and equalised the affair for Inter.
Lautaro Martinez, Arturo Vidal, and Lukaku all had golden chances to grab the game-winner but Milan reserve keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu had an outstanding match to keep the match level.
But it was Eriksen, subject to a reported move from Inter during the winter transfer window, who stepped up and give his side the win with a screamer into the top of the net.
Due to yellow card accumulation, both Lukaku and Archif Hakimi will suspended for the first leg of the semifinal.
