Gregg Popovich rejects Texas governor’s decision to remove mask mandate

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced he’s removing the statewide mask mandate, but Gregg Popovich isn’t ready to follow suit.

On Tuesday morning, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made quite the controversial decision, as he took to Twitter to announce that the state will be opening back up to 100 percent and that he’s removing the mandate that requires folks to wear masks in public.

As you might imagine, that announcement has come with plenty of negative reactions, including from the sports world. San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was among the countless people who weren’t happy to see Abbott’s tweet and had a message for the governor.

Gregg Popovich is not a fan of the mask mandate being removed in Texas

As you can tell from the tweet above, Popovich isn’t buying Abbott’s plan and will continue to wear his mask when he’s on the bench for his team. Those are the rules for all NBA squads after all and Abbott has no authority to change things there.

Popovich has been among the NBA coaches who has been taking the coronavirus pandemic seriously from the start. That’s why it’s easy to understand why he can’t believe Abbott has made this head-scratching decision to not only remove the mask mandate, but also open up things in the state as if nothing was going on.

As for the action on the hardwood, Popovich has helped the Spurs post a 17-13 record through the first 30 games of the campaign. With that mark, San Antonio sits in sixth place of the Western Conference standings, 7.5 games back of the No. 1 Utah Jazz.

While Popovich will remain focused on helping San Antonio get wins and keep making noise out West, he also won’t remain silent on topics outside of the NBA. That’s been the case for years and things won’t change.
