Goals by Lewis Dunk and Leandro Trossard gave Brighton a vital 2-1 victory over Southampton in an entertaining game at St Mary’s.

Dunk pounced early in the first half while Trossard swept home a superb move after the break. Che Adams found the net for Saints but it is another defat for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

It was a decent start by both sides, with plenty of flowing football. But it was the visitors who took the lead as Dunk opened the scoring on 16 minutes.

Pascal Gross’s outswinging corner was met by Dunk, who powered his header past Fraser Forster. The keeper may well think he could have done better.

The Seagulls defender was being marked by Ryan Bertrand and there was never any doubt who would get to the ball.

Brighton were in front for just 11 minutes as Che Adams levelled affairs on 27 minutes. Bertrand’s clever flick-on found the forward and he smashed home from close range.

That made it three in three for a player who could not buy a goal earlier in the season. The game continued to ebb and flow, with both sides playing attacking football.

The visitors should have been 2-1 up at the break after Gross missed a golden opportunity. He was clear in the Saints box but somehow Forster and Jannik Vestergaard managed to keep him out.

Brighton started the second period the brighter of the two teams. It took Graham Potter’s men 11 minutes to find the net and it was a goal worth waiting for.

Adam Lallana and Danny Welbeck combined well to find Trossard, who buried his shot into the roof of the net.

The Seagulls tightened up as the game progressed, knowing that three points would be massive in their bid for survival. Southampton could not find a way through with Hasenhuttl clearly frustrated on the sidelines.

A late penalty appeal by Saints was turned down after a VAR review.
