Solskjaer names Man Utd star most like himself, old teammate he’d sign

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Mason Greenwood is the player who reminds him of himself the most out of the current Manchester United squad.

Solskjaer scored more than 100 goals for United during his time with the club, so has quite the reputation to follow.

Some of his strikers have struggled for goals this season, but he will be hoping they can rediscover their form for the final few months of the season.

One such player is Greenwood, who has endured some challenging times this season. Still only a teenager, though, his potential remains high.

Now, he has been given a further confidence boost by Solskjaer, who believes he can rival himself for the title of the most accurate finisher at the club.

Asked in a Q&A on Man Utd’s official website which current player reminds him most of himself, Solskjaer took several factors into account before settling on Greenwood.

He said: “There’s so many things. It depends on if it’s the mentality, the attitude.

“Is it the technical attributes? I’d like to think that Mason is the one who reminds me about myself the most, as a finisher and goalscorer.

“We should have had a competition me and him to see who is the most accurate finisher!”

After enjoying a successful spell with United as a player, Solskjaer has been the club’s manager since 2018.

He has overseen progress this season, but has still been unable to win a trophy during his time in charge of the club. There is optimism that might change in the near future, though.

Asked if he prefers playing or managing, Solskjaer admitted nothing can replace the days of his youth – but is still proud to hold the role he does.

He replied: “Every day of the week you’d like to be young and play football no matter what. That’s the best time of your life but time ticks for everyone, the clock ticks, so I’m really, really happy with being the manager as well.

“But I think everyone wants to be young and fresh and healthy and to be able to score goals for Man Utd. But I’ve got to say, I’m proud of being in this seat and seeing the boys improving and try to win trophies for us.”

Solskjaer ‘would take’ Ronaldo

Another interesting section of Solskjaer’s Q&A saw him asked which of his former teammates he would add to his squad if able to.

The United boss reflected on his time playing with current Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and chose him instead of a midfielder he doubts he would be able to manage.

Solskjaer said: “There’s a few players I’ve played with that I’d love to have in my team, of course. I’d love the player Roy Keane, I’m not sure if I could manage him though. I’d sign him every day of the week, Roy was so influential.

“But then again, I played with Cristiano [Ronaldo] and he’s been the best player in the world alongside Messi for the past 10-15 years now, so Cristiano. You’d take him in your team, for sure.”
