Scholes hails ‘sensational’ Man United star, urges others to match him

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has heaped praise on Bruno Fernandes but does not feel the team is too reliant on the forward.

Fernandes, 26, has revitalised United’s fortunes since singing from Sporting in January 2020. The Portugal international bagged 12 goals in all competitions in the second half of last season.

And he has found the net 19 times this term, with 14 of those coming in the league. It is not just his goal production that sets him apart, however.

The midfielder is creative and hard-working, giving the side a lift when he runs out onto the pitch. There is no doubt he has been the Red Devils’ best singing in years and one that could bring them silverware.

Scholes certainly enjoyed success during his 19 seasons playing at the Theatre of Dreams. He claimed 18 major trophies while winning 66 caps for England.

Fernandes has been compared to the Oldham-born ace. Scholes does not see it but feels he is a standout player at the club.

“He is different to me,” he told United’s official website. “I played in that [number 10] position for a while but I was never as creative or scored as many goals as he has in that position.

“Obviously I played in a deeper role than he is, but you have to look at his numbers and what he is doing is sensational.

“We just need to get a team around him that can push on to win the league.”

United not a one-man team

United sit second in the Premier League table, seven points behind Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand and the title may be beyond Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men this season.

Fernandes has started 23 of United’s 24 league games in 2020-2021. He has appeared in all of them and has justified a large price tag.

Many in the media feel Solskjaer is over-reliant on the former Sampdoria man. Scholes does not agree and feels he is just performing exactly how he should be.

“Are we too reliant on him? No I don’t think so,” he added. “That is his role in the team. You have to remember United paid a lot of money for this type of player.

“He is a player whose job it is to create goals and score goals. Now he is doing that better than we ever imagined. Other players need to step up now.”
