Rio urges Chelsea to make more of ‘fantastic’ star’s movement

Rio Ferdinand has urged Mason Mount’s Chelsea teammates to look earlier for the “immaculate” midfield star.

Mount opened the scoring for the Blues with an “exquisite” turn and finish as Chelsea secured a 2-0 win over Porto in Seville.

Mount received the ball from Jorginho on the edge of the Porto box, before turning brilliantly past a defender and firing home his 11th goal of the season.

F365 says: Chelsea need more than Mount to win the Champions League

Ben Chilwell took advantage of a defensive mistake late on to round the goalkeeper to double Chelsea’s advantage.

And Ferdinand hailed Mount’s goal but urged his teammates to look for him earlier and more frequently.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: “It’s an exquisite finish. The turn was just immaculate. He was a bit fortunate with the finish because the keeper puts out a leg, but it was fantastic play.

“What I like about him [Mount] is his movements off the ball to get on the ball.

“Once the other players start realising that he actually makes movements to get beyond the [opposition] defenders and start playing the ball a little bit longer than a 10-yard [pass] to feet, he will get more opportunity [to score].

“Because he made runs that no one saw, and he [would have been] in if they had played the ball forward.”

Ferdinand felt the comfortable win was a “big step in the right direction” for Tuchel’s Chelsea.

“Chelsea scored two fantastic goals,” he added. “They didn’t have to do too much but they were resolute.

“To a man they were adamant they were going to win. They got the job done and Tuchel will be delighted. That’s a big step in the right direction for Chelsea.”

Joe Cole was in awe of Mount after the game, insisting he’s a “manager’s dream”, perplexed by the criticism he still receives from some quarters.

“It’s all about the turn from Mason Mount,” former Blues star Cole said.

“To do that on his weak foot, with that composure… this kid!

“For the life of me, I don’t understand the criticism [of Mount]. There’s not even an argument. He’s a top, top player and a manager’s dream.”
