Reports reveals Tottenham paid super-agent £6m to sign summer flop

Tottenham reportedly paid super-agent Jorge Mendes £6million to sign a player last summer who has been hugely disappointing.

Spurs forked out £15m to bring Matt Doherty in from Wolves, with many pundits believing they had landed a bargain.

However, the Republic of Ireland star has struggled to replicate the form he showed during his time at Molineux.

And now Football Insider claims that the north London side paid Mendes £6m of that fee to get their man.

To be fair to Doherty, he has largely struggled adapting to Jose Mourinho’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.

At Wolves he was allowed to bomb forward as a wing-back and was regularly scoring or providing assists.

Mourinho is loathed to play Doherty and Sergio Reguilon in the same back four, given that both prefer to attack.

That has no doubt hindered the 29-year-old, who has often played second fiddle to Serge Aurier this term.

Doherty playing for his future

A recent report suggested that Doherty was playing for his future at the club, although he produced his best display in a Spurs shirt in the recent Europa League away tie at Wolfsberger.

The problem is that the full-back cannot get a regular run of games, with Mourinho chopping and changing his full-backs.

That could signal the end of his Spurs career before it has even really begun, unless Mourinho suddenly switches tactics.

But at least Tottenham fans will be relieved to learn that the real figure they paid for the player was seemingly closer to £9m.

Spurs are next in action on Thursday night when they head to Fulham, looking to build on the back of the Burnley win.
