Report explains how Weghorst ‘clashed’ with teammates – and why Man Utd see it as ideal – Football365

Wout Weghorst did not see eye to eye with some of his Burnley teammates due to a perceived ego problem – but Man Utd see that as a positive.

Man Utd are hoping to strike a deal between Burnley and Weghorst’s current loan club Besiktas to bring the Dutchman to Old Trafford on a short-term deal.

They believe the Turkish side’s financial ‘desperation’, as well as the player’s eagerness to play for his ‘dream club’, will facilitate the move.

Negotiations must first be held over a termination of Weghorst’s Besiktas loan deal as there is no recall clause in that contract. They will expect to be recompensed if the striker returns to Turf Moor, as expected, before heading on to Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag noted that “there is a reason” Anthony Martial has been substituted so often recently, adding that: “It is because he cannot manage the load. This is why we are looking for another striker.

“It is not about us not relying on him. His physical load is not, at this moment, so high that he can play every third day a game of 90 minutes. So I have to manage that together with him.

“We are on a thin line at the moment because the qualities of Anthony Martial are so important right now to our game. His movements, his ball security, the pressing, let’s not forget that. We need that profile to be a threat.”

A report in The Athletic has added some information on the deal, which remains ‘complicated’ despite all parties being open to it.

They go into detail on the player’s ‘ultra-competitive’ nature, explaining how he ‘is not scared’ of offering teammates advice on how to improve, and ‘he was known to send messages late into the night to team-mates about how they could improve partnerships’ at Burnley.

‘He began to cut a frustrated figure around the training ground because of his own form,’ one line reads. ‘There were suggestions he clashed with team-mates due to his self-confidence, which some took as bordering on arrogance.’

But ‘United are not put off by that’ because ‘they want players with personality, and feel the striker will suit Old Trafford more than was the case 45 minutes up the road at Turf Moor.’
