Rangers: Cantwell was “brilliant” today

Glasgow Rangers secured their third victory in seven days, although it was a completely different performance compared to their convincing 3-0 win in midweek.

Michael Beale‘s men won 2-1 at Ibrox this afternoon, but it wasn’t without a scare as the Light Blues manager was forced into an early change, with John Lundstram having to be substituted due to an injury to replaced by Malik Tillman.

It was the American who gave Rangers the lead just before half-time. January signing Todd Cantwell delivered a cross which was met by Tillman from close range as he sent a header beyond Ross Laidlaw in the Ross County goal.

The away side snatched an equaliser with just under half an hour left, when Jordan White rose highest and headed beyond Jon McLaughlin to make it 1-1. The scores didn’t stay level for long, though, with Borna Barisic netting a wonderful free kick to restore Rangers’ advantage, and it would stay that way until the final whistle.

The Croatian was excellent, making five key passes during the game while scoring the winner, but it was Cantwell who was Beale’s unsung hero this afternoon.

The midfielder shone in a brief cameo appearance against Hearts in midweek, taking 25 touches and completing 18 passes in just 14 minutes at Tynecastle, and he deservedly earned a start today.

Will Rangers win silverware this season?

Yes

No

No

The 24-year-old carried on from where he left off, taking 90 touches during his time on the pitch against Ross County and completing 94% of his passes, proving just how effective he is at dictating the play and controlling possession.

Journalist Joshua Barrie sang his praises at half-time, describing the player’s run to set up Tillman’s opener as “brilliant”, and the ex-Norwich gem has certainly made an impact at Ibrox during his short stint in Glasgow so far.

Cantwell also hit the woodwork, made two key passes and had a total of four shots, giving Beale an extra dynamic in attack, while he also chipped in defensively by making two interceptions and one tackle.

Despite understandable concerns for how he would fare at Rangers after a topsy-turvy first half of the season at Norwich where he was in and out of the team, there is no doubting his undisputed class. If he stays fit during his time at Ibrox, the Englishman will turn out to be an excellent addition indeed.
