Newcastle plot swoops for Arsenal, Liverpool targets as club ‘revise plans’ with £60m transfer eyed

Newcastle have reportedly ‘revised their plans’ in January and they are now focused on signing a ‘midfield playmaker’ with Jonjo Shelvey out of action.

The Magpies have been busy in the transfer market in each of the past two windows.

The club’s Saudi-led takeover was completed last October and over £200m has been spent on signings over the past few months.

This has set them up for a superb start to the 2022/23 season as they currently sit third in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s side have only lost one of their opening 16 league games and this has set them up to battle for a spot in the Champions League.

A report from The Telegraph is suggesting that Newcastle are now ‘redrawing their January transfer plans’ as it is now a priority to sign a new centre-midfielder.

Howe has pushed for this as he is keen to give his team a better chance of maintaining their superb start to this campaign.

The Newcastle boss has indicated that he wants ‘players who are first team ready, preferably with Premier League experience’. It is noted that their situation has been made more urgent with Shelvey set for a long spell on the sidelines.

It was recently claimed that Newcastle are keen to sign Jorginho from Chelsea but this has been denied by The Telegraph.

Instead, Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans are ‘on the radar’.

A move for Caicedo is considered a ‘long shot’ considering that Brighton are ‘reluctant to sell’ to Newcastle after they poached Dan Ashworth.

Caicedo is considered an alternative target to Jude Bellingham for Liverpool and it is believed that he would cost ‘in excess of £60m’.

A move for Tielemans would be easier to pull off as his contract at Leicester is set to expire next summer.

The Belgium international has been on ‘Newcastle’s radar for the last two windows’ but it is expected that they will face competition from clubs around Europe.

The report adds that Newcastle United are also ‘still keen’ on James Maddison after they were initially linked with him earlier this year.

Leicester wanted around £60m in the summer but his value will decrease in the coming months with his contract due to expire in 2024.

The Telegraph later note that ‘Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram is a long-standing target’ for Newcastle.

But they face issues as they are reportedly ‘having problems staying within Financial Fair Play rules’.

In an attempt to avoid punishment, ‘any money spent in January will have to be taken out of the summer budget’.

It is also claimed that ‘loan-now, pay later deals, with an obligation or option to buy in the summer, are being extensively explored’.
