Man Utd star offers simple solution to club’s 285-minute goal drought

Nemanja Matic has told Manchester United the simple way in which the team can bring an immediate end to their worrying wait for a Premier League goal.

A day after rivals Manchester City made it 21 wins in a row to open up a 15-point gap at the top, the Red Devils were left frustrated in a goalless draw with the Eagles. They have won only one of their last five matches in the division.

In Gary Neville’s words, United are sleepwalking their games right now. He fears they could be in danger of letting slip their top-four place if they don’t wake up soon.

At the heart of their issues is a concerning lack of goals. The Red Devils have now gone 285 minutes since their last goal – Bruno Fernandes’ penalty against Newcastle on February 25.

Indeed, three full games have come and gone with United drawing a blank. It’s a trend they need to snap soon if they are to secure a top-fourth berth.

Addressing their concerns, Matic wants Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to start taking more risks.

Matic told United’s official website following the stalemate at Selhurst Park: “It’s hard to explain, but I think that we have to do much better in these sorts of games, especially to create more opportunities, to risk more in their half, around their box.

“Crystal Palace were very solid at the back. Their midfield dropped in a bit so it was very difficult to break through. We have to give credit to them, but we know what we have to do. We need to do better in attack. We know these are games we have to win.”

Matic on City challenge

United’s next clash is the small matter of a game against table-toppers Manchester City. With Pep Guardiola’s side enjoying a 21-match winning streak, claiming a win at the Etihad will be far from easy.

Matic though remains undaunted – especially as United are protecting a 21-game unbeaten away run of their own.

And given United have kept nine clean sheets in all competitions on their travels this season, the Serb thinks United can rightly go there confident of a result.

Matic added: “I think we defended well as a team, all 11 players. We need to take some positives; we didn’t concede a goal, we got a point.

“During the season, there are periods where you score lots of goals, and you have some periods where you concede some goals, but you need to break that barrier in the next game, if it is possible.

“We have to be focused for the next game because everyone knows we have Manchester City to play. [It’s a] big game and big challenge for us and we want to get three points to see where we are.”
