Liverpool, Chelsea ‘very attentive’ to EFL star with clubs told €35-40m is needed to ‘win prize’

Liverpool and Chelsea are reportedly ‘very attentive’ to Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge and they have been told how much he will cost.

Sheffield United invested around £22m to sign Berge from Belgian side Genk during the 2019/20 season while they were in the Premier League.

Berge missed much of his first full season at United through injury as they suffered relegation down to the Championship.

Redknapp? Rodgers? What England need is another Gareth Southgate

But the midfielder has shown what he is capable of for the Blades over the past year. He has grabbed eight goals and six assists in 41 appearances in the Championship.

He was linked with several clubs in the summer as he was expected to leave Sheffield United.

Liverpool expressed their ‘interest’ in him last month, and Chelsea also enquired about him.

Club Brugge were also keen to sign him and Berge has since come out and stated how he dealt with being in limbo in the summer:

“It was strange. I stayed in hotels all summer. It was a bit clunky to lie in there with three or four half-open suitcases,” Berge said.

“I moved out between seasons and stayed in hotels for the past few weeks. I sat there and didn’t really know what was happening. It’s been back and forth.

On deadline day, he added: “I sat there and didn’t do much. You get drawn into it, but I’m not the one sitting on the phone or talking to others.

“I’m sitting there watching a series or preparing for the next training day. There’s not a lot going on for me personally other than there’s a game going on outside where I’m sitting.

“There was a lot of interest, concrete interest, you weighed things up a little bit, it had to work out for both the club and me, and it didn’t happen.

“It’s always nice to sit in one position and know that there were clubs that were very interested.”

He continued: “It was a process all summer. But my ambition has always been to play at the top level.

“Even though they showed a lot of confidence and pushed on over the summer, I’ve always said I’ve been there (in Belgium) and was interested in playing at the top level. That was the priority for me.”

Jeunes Footeux (via Sport Witness) are reporting that Liverpool and Chelsea are currently ‘very attentive’ to how Berge is faring for Sheffield United.

Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona are also believed to be interested in the Norway international.

It is stated that it ‘would not be a surprise’ if Sheffield United receive offers for their prized asset in January.

The report adds that ‘an offer of €35-40m’ would be needed if clubs are going to ‘win the prize’ of securing Berge’s services.
