Liverpool can terrify Blues with Wijnaldum

Liverpool take on Chelsea at Anfield on Thursday in what looks like being a key clash in the race for Champions League football.

The Reds head into the match having lost four out of their last five league games, but they did manage to overcome Sheffield United last time out.

One key to their hopes of claiming victory is surely set to be Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Dutchman has been an ever-present for Jurgen Klopp’s men this season, starting 24 out of 26 Premier League games, whilst making an appearance in the two that he didn’t start.

He has only scored two goals this season thus far and has only provided 0.6 key passes per game, so it is not going to be in his offensive work where he is going to be most effective against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.

Should Liverpool sell Georginio Wijnaldum?

No

Deployed at the base of midfield, it is instead his passing that has caught the eye during 2020/21 and it is that aspect that is going to be key against the Blues.

The £36m-rated midfielder has racked up an eye-catching pass success rate of 91.9% which is only bettered by Curtis Jones in the Liverpool squad.

Coming up against a Chelsea midfield that is likely to consist of both N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, who are averaging 2.2 and 1.3 interceptions per game respectively this season, his composure and ability to pick out a teammate is only going to benefit.

Should Wijnaldum be able to plot a route through the robust Chelsea midfield with his excellent passing, then that will give the opportunities to the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to pressure a shakey Blues backline that has already conceded 25 goals this season

Klopp then hope to be able to once again rely on a player that he has previously stated “has all the things you need” in what could be an intriguing midfield battle. If Wijnaldum can flourish against Kante and Jorginho, Liverpool have a great chance to break their recent Anfield hoodoo.

In more news, Dean Windass has implored the Reds to move for a viable Roberto Firmino replacement…
