Klopp demands £16.7m ‘new archer’ with Liverpool ‘in talks’ to seal transfer

Jurgen Klopp wants Liverpool to sign a new goalkeeper in the form of Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin, according to reports in Spain.

The signing of Alisson from Roma for £66.8m in July 2018 helped catapult the Reds to Champions League glory in 2019 before winning the Premier League title a year later.

Allison has remained available for most of the season, missing two Premier League matches, with Caoimhin Kelleher proving to be an able deputy when called upon.

The Brazilian missed 14 Premier League matches over the previous two seasons but, with former West Ham goalkeeper Adrian also at Liverpool’s disposal, they have rarely struggled for cover.

However, Spanish publication Nacional now claims that Klopp wants another goalkeeper to provide back-up in case Alisson is unavailable.

It is understood that Liverpool are ‘are in talks to close the deal’ for Real Madrid goalkeeper Lunin, who has played six times for the Ukraine national side.

Klopp wants Lunin to ‘take over as Alisson Becker’s substitute goalkeeper, a responsibility that is getting too big for Adrián Sanmiguel and Caoimhin Kelleher’.

Liverpool are ‘seriously interested’ in Lunin, with the former Zorya Luhansk stopper only playing three times for Real Madrid in all competitions since his €13.5m move to the Bernabeu in 2018.

Lunin has been on loan at Leganes, Real Vallodolid and Oviedo since joining Los Blancos, while he has ‘lived in the shadow of Thibaut Courtois’.

Liverpool are ready to ‘promise him a lot more continuity’ with opportunities for him in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, as well as covering for Alisson if he gets injured or suspended.

Klopp has ‘asked for a new archer’ and Lunin – who is also interesting Dutch club Ajax – is now ‘favourite’ to move to Anfield for a €20m (£16.7m) transfer fee.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have six games across three other competitions before their Carabao Cup final against Chelsea after seeing off Arsenal last night and Klopp has vowed not to get distracted by the Wembley date

“You play a final, it is likely you will play an outstandingly strong team and that is what we do now,” Klopp told reporters after beating the Gunners 2-0.

“Wembley is a special place, we have a lot of games to play until then. We will see where we are then, but we really put a lot of effort in this competition and we really wanted to go through and when you are in the final there is no reason to be a part of the final if you don’t want to win it.

“When we will be there at the end of February we will give it a go, but unfortunately the opponent probably will as well.

“The mood in the dressing room is over the moon. Difficult game, difficult time, but the boys were exceptional. First half, Arsenal started lively, then we calmed it down, played good football and created plenty. Second half similar.”
