Klopp claims Liverpool issues stretch further than just at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp admitted that Liverpool’s problems are not just at home despite slipping to a fifth consecutive defeat at Anfield.

Chelsea claimed a 1-0 win on Merseyside thanks to a Mason Mount goal, condemning Liverpool to a fifth straight home defeat for the first time in their history.

It was not that long ago that Liverpool seemed invincible at home, but now that dynasty is falling. The loss to Chelsea further complicates their chances of finishing in the top four.

Liverpool are now four points behind the fourth-placed Blues and may even be looking further over their shoulders at teams behind them with games in hand.

Klopp’s Liverpool were a cut above the rest last season, but have lost their magic this time around. It took them until the last five minutes to even record a shot on target against Chelsea.

Klopp insisted it was a close game, but picked apart their issues in defence.

“The individual quality of Mason Mount in that moment made the difference,” he told Sky Sports.

“It was a tight game, intense game. Both teams invested a lot. That is it pretty much.

“They had the goal they scored which was offside. The second half another counter attack, we had more situations around, the great one with Sadio Mane and other situations where we did not score.

“You have to defend differently and we didn’t do well there. There are a lot of things out there you have to consider.

“In the end we conceded one goal, we made the mistake there; the other was offside and you can say it was good defending but with all the possession we had you need to have more chances. Everything was really good until the final pass.

“Unfortunately we cannot say it is only at home. It is not about Anfield or whatever; it is in general, too often. In the decisive moments we have to improve.

“We have to show our quality in these moments and we don’t do that often enough.”

Klopp explains Salah sub

Klopp took something of a risk when chasing the game by substituting off top scorer Mohamed Salah just after the hour-mark.

The Egyptian winger was not happy to go off, but his manager believed he had a reason to make that decision.

“I just brought on flesh legs,” Klopp said. “Mo looked like today he suffered a bit, he played a lot of games.

“I could have taken off Sadio [Mane] or Bobby [Firmino], that is all clear but at that moment it looked like Mo.

“[James] Milner we bought on to wake them up a bit and keep them in the game because we needed one situation.

“It is a massive blow. It is not done yet. We have to win football games.”
