Fresneda to decide between Arsenal, Dortmund ‘on Monday’ as Ornstein reveals £13m fee

Real Valladolid right-back Ivan Fresneda will make a decision on his future on Monday with Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund the only sides left standing in the battle to sign him, according to reports.

Fresneda has been very impressive for the Spanish side this term, resulting in plenty of interest this month.

Newcastle United were also believed to be interested in signing the 18-year-old with Eddie Howe looking for a back-up for Kieran Trippier.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Sunday that fresh talks between Arsenal and Fresneda were going to take place this week with the Magpies remaining keen.

However, the race for the starlet’s signature appears to be close to its conclusion.

According to The Athletic, Fresneda ‘will make a decision on his next club on Monday’.

Both Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund have agreed a €15million (£13.1m) transfer fee with Valladolid, and in a boost to the Spanish side, have agreed to loan the player back for the rest of the 2022-23 campaign.

Terms with Fresneda have been agreed as well. The report adds that Newcastle have ‘dropped out of the race’.

As far as options for young players go, it does not really get much better than Dortmund or Arsenal.

Especially in the case of the former, Fresneda will be guaranteed game time and the German side have a wonderful track record of developing young talent.

The 18-year-old defender has become a mainstay in the Valladolid team this term.

After being an unused substitute in the club’s opening four La Liga encounters, Fresneda has started seven league matches in 22-23.

His opportunity came on matchday five in an away game to Girona when Luis Perez was forced off with an injury in the first half of Valladolid’s 2-1 defeat.

It has been a woeful campaign for the Pucelanos, who sit 18th in La Liga having lost five consecutive matches.

Mikel Arteta is obviously happy to let Fresneda stay in his home country for the rest of the season but is also willing to offload Cedric Soares this month if reports are to be believed.

Fulham are reportedly interested in signing the experienced full-back.

This would leave Arteta with Benjamin White and Takehiro Tomiyasu, which should be enough depth to last Arsenal until the end of the season.
