Dyche lauds ‘outstanding’ Burnley mentality in Arsenal draw – Football365.com

Sean Dyche has praised his Burnley team for their ‘outstanding’ mentality in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

They went behind in the sixth minute as Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang beat Nick Pope.

Burnley managed to keep it at 1-0 before getting great fortune in their equaliser.

Granit Xhaka’s pass deflected off striker Chris Wood and into the net before half-time.

Some brilliant defending from James Tarkowski and Ben Mee managed to keep things level.

Erik Pieters also blocked a Nicolas Pepe shot off the line.

Speaking about the performance, Dyche told BBC Sport: “We had to work very hard against a decent Arsenal side but the mentality of the players was outstanding. It is a third game in a week and the physical side of the game was tremendous.

“Everyone has the right to play as they wish to and we have pressed really well. You cannot always do it against good technical sides but [Chris] Wood gets his reward because of good intent.

“We had a very good second half against Leicester and we were a little bit jaded in the first half, but we needed 1% more intent.

“We did that and during the end of the game, the mentality to block and make sure we didn’t concede was fantastic.”

Arsenal were denied two penalty claims in the second half as the ball seemed to hit Pieters on the arm.

Speaking about the issue, Dyche said: “I don’t think he has thrown his arm up and I do not believe it was deliberate.”

The English manager also praised VAR for overturning a Pieters red card. The defender’s block against Pepe’s shot hit him on the shoulder, but the referee initially gave a red.

Dyche said: “The referee had his red card out in a millisecond but that is what VAR is for. I know it needs streamlining but that is what it’s there for. People know our history against Arsenal with last minute goals and handballs but today we got the right use of VAR.”
