With Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic heading into Saturday’s Premiership fixture in much-improved form, with the Bhoys currently being on a run of three straight wins in all competitions, the 56-year-old will undoubtedly be hoping for yet another step in the right direction at Parkhead this afternoon.
With Saturday’s opponents St Johnstone having picked up a mere six points from a possible 15 over their last five fixtures, the Hoops manager will know that the visit of the Saints presents his team with a fantastic chance of closing the gap on the Premiership leaders.
Should Giakoumakis start against St. Johnstone?
Will Postecoglou make any changes to the side which started the 2-0 win over Ferencvaros on Tuesday? Here’s how we think Celtic could line up against St Johnstone, along with the latest team and injury news…
While Postecoglou recently confirmed that none of James Forrest, Christopher Jullien or Greg Taylor will be available for today’s fixture due to their ongoing injuries, the Hoops boss did reveal that both Josip Juranovic and James McCarthy look set to make a return to action against St Johnstone.
As such, we predict that the 56-year-old will make two changes to the team which started against in midweek.
The first of these changes comes at left-back, with the £2.25m-rated Juranovic immediately being thrown back into the side in place of 19-year-old Adam Montgomery. The Croatia international had sometimes been fielded in this position prior to his injury despite preferring to play on the right-hand side of a back four.
The remainder of the back five is untouched, with Joe Hart starting in goal, Anthony Ralston keeping his place at right-back and Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers making up Celtic’s centre-back duo.
In the middle of the park, the trio of David Turnbull, Callum McGregor and Tom Rogic is set to remain unchanged, with the three players having impressed in the Bhoys’ crucial European win on Tuesday.
The second change comes in Postecoglou’s front three, with Liel Abada – who has endured a dip in form in recent weeks – dropping out of the XI and the £2.25m-rated centre-forward Georgios Giakoumakis taking his place in the side, with Jota switching from the left to the right flank and Kyogo Furuhashi starting on the left of the Hoops’ attack.
