Alexander-Arnold gives frank assessment of woeful Liverpool demise

Trent Alexander-Arnold admits Liverpool’s form has left the players scratching their heads and feels they got what they deserved against Chelsea.

The Reds went down 1-0 to Thomas Tuchel’s side on Thursday evening. Mason Mount’s 42nd-minute goal was enough for the Blues to take all three points from Anfield.

It was the Merseysiders’ fifth straight defeat on home soil – the first time that has happened in the club’s history. The result sees Jurgen Klopp’s side down in seventh spot in the Premier League standings.

And there is a real possibility that they will not secure a top-four place in 2020-2021. It is all a far cry from last term when they ran away with the title.

And things were looking good during the first half of the current campaign. They were top at the turn of the year but seven defeats in 11 games has been disastrous.

Injuries to key players have not helped. Virgil van Dijk is the biggest loss while Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have also been absent.

Klopp has had to shuffle his pack and the winter recruitment has not helped matters. Losing to Chelsea has added to the misery and Alexander-Arnold is at a loss as to what is going wrong.

“That’s the million-dollar question for us at the minute,” he told the club’s official website. “I thought we played quite well. We didn’t create that many chances in the game, fair play to them. They kept us out.”

No excuses from England man

It has been a dramatic fall from grace for the north-west giants. Klopp pinned his hopes on staying in the title race until his big guns returned.

That has not happened as they sit 22 points adrift of table-topping Manchester City. And Alexander-Arnold gave an honest assessment of Thursday’s match.

“I don’t really think we deserved to win at the end of the day, so it was a tough one to take,” he added.

Reports suggest Van Dijk and other prominent injured stars may return before the end of the season. That will give everyone at the club a lift, but the right-back is refusing to blame injuries for their poor form.

“It’s a boost and it’s always nice to have a fit squad, but there’s still a lot of lads out,” he continued. “But there’s no excuses from us. We’re a good enough squad to be winning, no matter who’s in and who’s out, rotation, we should be winning these games.”
