The agent of Gabriel Veron was coy when asked about potential interest from Manchester United in the forward.
Veron is one of several young players on United’s radar as they build for the future. The 18-year-old has been making waves in the Palmeiras first team in his native Brazil.
Already with 11 goals and five assists to his name from 36 appearances for Palmeiras, Veron seems to have a bright future.
United’s interest in the winger emerged in November 2019, when Corriere Dello Sport mentioned them as a contender for his signature.
Since then, Veron has further established himself at senior level. United’s interest apparently remains.
It emerged last month that United have made moves behind the scenes to beat their rivals to the signing of Veron – who has a €60m release clause, but could cost closer to €20m in the current climate.
Hence, an Italian source has now asked his agent if United genuinely are competing for his signing.
“These are situations that I cannot anticipate,” Lupercio Segundo told Europa Calcio. “There are talks with some clubs and the proposals are expected to become official.”
Segundo’s response may have been vague. But elsewhere in the interview, he admitted that Palmeiras should expect to receive offers for Veron.
“I believe that the proposals in the next market window will be inevitable,” he said. “Palmeiras has a well-defined plan for Gabriel and we will follow it.
“European football? Gabriel Veron is a great player, I have no doubts about that. Despite his young age, he’s a mature athlete, who’s always proved to be decisive.
“He has many qualities and characteristics that are indispensable for today’s football.”
Veron remains under contract with Palmeiras until 2025.
Man Utd make contact for Bayern star
One winger with a bigger profile than Veron at present to be linked with United is Kingsley Coman.
The Frenchman was a key part of the Bayern Munich side that won the Champions League last summer. Reports in Germany suggest United could try to lure him away.
Coman was one of United’s alternatives when their pursuit of Jadon Sancho encountered difficulties. Ultimately, though, they failed to sign either.
United brought in Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo instead. But they may still be after a more senior option out wide.
It appears their interest in Coman may remain. Reports are now revealing two incentives they hope to tempt him with.
