UFC Vegas 21: Eryk Anders and Darren Stewart fought to a no-contest.
Eryk Anders and Darren Stewart fought to a no decision (doctor stoppage, illegal knee), Round 1 – 4:37 at UFC Vegas 21 on Saturday, March 13, 2021, live from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, NV.
The fight between Anders and Stewart was looking like an early candidate for the round of the year until it abruptly ended following an illegal knee. The way the fight ended was very similar to the end of the previous weekend’s bantamweight title fight between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling.
The back and forth affair saw both fighters hurt their opponent. Stewart got off to a great start but Anders rallied. In the final minute of the opening round, Anders had Stewart badly hurt and was gunning for a stoppage. Anders was landing heavy punches and mixed in takedowns. Stewart looked finished but referee Herb Dean allowed him to fight up to his feet. Anders quickly took Stewart down again. While Stewart was grounded, Anders landed an illegal knee to the side of Stewart’s head. Immediately, Dean stopped the fight and asked the referee to look at Stewart. The doctor asked Stewart if he could continue. Stewart, holding onto the fence said he could. The doctor asked Stewart to walk forward. After seeing how Stewart walked forward, the doctor advised Dean to stop the fight. The fight was ruled a no-contest because Dean did not believe that Anders’ knee was intentional. Anders immediately apologized to Stewart following the fight.
Kevin Lee took to Twitter to explain that Ander’s knee was illegal.
Several fighters were having flashbacks to the previous weekend and UFC 259 when Aljamain Sterling won the bantamweight title following an illegal knee from Petr Yan.
Uriah Hall was very upset with the doctor for stopping the fight.
Sterling also took to Twitter following the illegal knee.
