Egg Bowl descends into complete fan chaos: Here’s everything that happened (Video)

A controversial call in the Egg Bowl between the Ole Miss Rebels and Mississippi State Bulldogs resulted in fans throwing garbage on the field.

College football’s rivalry week began on Thanksgiving with the Ole Miss Rebels and Mississippi State Bulldogs competing for the Egg Bowl. Recently, they have been much talked about contests, such as Elijah Moore’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty ultimately leading to an extra point miss in the 2019 matchup.

The 2022 edition featured some controversy. Specifically a call in the fourth quarter.

With a little over seven minutes remaining in regulation, Rebels quarterback Jaxson Dart threw a screen pass that was dropped by wide receiver Jonathan Mingo and picked up by Bulldogs linebacker Jett Johnson. It was initially ruled an incomplete pass, but after a review, the call was overturned, giving Mississippi State a fumble recovery.

Controversial call results in Ole Miss fans pelting field with garbage

As you can see in the above video from ESPN College Football’s official Twitter account, fans at Vaught Hemingway Stadium began throwing garbage onto the field. One fan was so angry after the game, that they actually threw a chair onto the field (video courtesy of Rivals’ Jack Byers).

At that point, the Rebels trailed the Bulldogs 24-16. On the following drive, Mississippi State fumbled themselves, as linebacker Troy Brown forced the football out of the possession of quarterback Will Rogers.

15 plays later, Dart threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Dayton Wade to cut the deficit to 24-22 with just under two minutes remaining. Ole Miss’ two-point conversion attempt failed, and they failed to recover the onside kick attempt. That allowed Mississippi State to recover and secure the victory.

The Bulldogs now have possession of the Golden Egg trophy for the first time since 2019. Ole Miss fans won’t forget this game due to the controversial call in the fourth quarter.
