Cowboys: 1 shocking move Dallas could make in free agency

If the Dallas Cowboys have one shocking move in them for NFL free agency, they should consider signing safety Anthony Harris.

Time for the Dallas Cowboys to shore up their defense.

After watching the unit allow a litany of points last season, owner/general manager Jerry Jones could reasonable target any level of his defense for a big move. However, no position is needed more than safety. Dallas doesn’t have a top-tier player at the position after watching Darian Thompson, Xavier Woods and Donovan Wilson get most of the snaps in 2020.

Looking at the free-agent market, there’s a handful of quality options. The best might be former Minnesota Vikings safety Anthony Harris, who played last year on the franchise tag.

The Dallas Cowboys should sign Anthony Harris in free agency

Harris, 29, spent the first six seasons of his career with the Vikings and led the league with six interceptions in 2019. While he hasn’t made a Pro Bowl or All-Pro team, Harris provides a high-end safety who could anchor a young secondary with cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Jourdan Lewis playing on the outside.

With the Cowboys having taken care of quarterback Dak Prescott, there’s now a clear picture of their salary cap. Going into free agency — which starts Monday with the legal tampering period — Dallas has approximately $18 million to spend, and so Harris would easily be fit into the fold. If signed to something like a three-year, $30 million deal, the initial cap hit would likely be somewhere around $6 million.

While the Cowboys could bolster the offensive line or add another pass-rusher, it makes the most sense to fix the secondary.
