Brandon Nimmo’s depressing comment will make Braves fans smile

Brandon Nimmo’s brutally honest comments about the New York Mets’ last two games will make any Atlanta Braves fan smile across the country.

New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo knows his team blew two golden opportunities vs. the Atlanta Braves on Friday and Saturday night.

Although Hurricane Ian did not impact the three-game series in Atlanta, the Mets were unable to get road victories over the Braves with Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer on the mound. Atlanta won the first two games of the critical series with Max Fried and Kyle Wright getting the starts. With Sunday night’s game being for pretty much all the marbles, the stakes could not be higher.

While Chris Bassitt has been excellent for the Mets this season, he is not deGrom or Scherzer, and he has to go up against another big-game pitcher for the Braves in the veteran Charlie Morton.

So how important is the final game of the series between the Mets and the Braves? Braves beat reporter Mark Bowman of MLB.com explains it perfectly for those unaware of where the NL East race between Atlanta and New York is at currently. No wonder why this series finale will be played on Sunday Night Baseball. This is October baseball after all, so get ready for all that comes with it.

If Atlanta completes the series sweep on Sunday night, its magic number would drop down to one game. This is because Atlanta will have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mets. Should they lose the final game of the series to New York, the Braves’ magic number to win the NL East would remain at four with three road games left. Atlanta would not control its own destiny in that case.

Although Atlanta and New York have already clinched postseason berths, winning the NL East is paramount on both teams’ minds. Doing so would mean the No. 2 seed in the National League, and most importantly, a first-round bye into the NLDS. While the NL East’s second-place finisher will presumably be the No. 4 seed in the NL, they would still have to host an NL Wild Card series.

Ultimately, a third loss in a row to the Braves for the Mets gives them next to no chance at winning the division. Atlanta would have to lose out to the Miami Marlins, while the New York would have to win out vs. the Washington Nationals. Although a Braves’ loss on Sunday is not as disastrous as a Mets’ one would be, New York would have the head-to-head tiebreaker with it.

While the Braves face some pressure on Sunday Night Baseball, the Mets have to win this game.
