These three players could be surprising cap casualties for the Chiefs.

This will be an important offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs. Fresh off a disappointing loss in the Super Bowl, Kansas City still has a core that can make a run at another title next season but has a lot of free agents they will need to decide whether to retain or not.

The Chiefs are currently projected to be over the salary cap for 2021, meaning they will have to make some tough choices to get under the threshold. Let’s take a look at three potential surprising cuts for Kansas City, beginning with a guy who didn’t suit up for them at all in 2020.

3. Kansas City Chiefs surprise cuts – RB Damien Williams

A key contributor to the Chiefs’ victory in Super Bowl LIV, Williams opted out of the season due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Kansas City’s running game didn’t miss a beat without Williams as Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a solid rookie year while Darrel Williams staked out a solid complementary role in the backfield.

With CEH cemented as the starter, expect Kansas City to pursue a cheaper option to back him up next season. Cutting Williams would save the Chiefs just over two million dollars, which makes a ton of sense since they can either look to re-sign him at a lower rate or move on to a cheaper back in either free agency or the draft.
