3 free agents the Jacksonville Jaguars should avoid in 2021 offseason

The Jacksonville Jaguars are entering a new era of football ,but these three overpaid free agents could keep them in the past.

Low and behold, this is not your daddy’s version of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Urban Meyer has returned to the Sunshine State to make sure that the AFC South program is back to a winning culture.

Well, actually to start a winning culture for the first time in what feels like their 26-year history.

Jacksonville is expected to draft Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick. Hopefully, the weapons surrounding him will be enough to put together a quality rookie year as the team continues to rebuild. However, with $82.5 million in salary cap space, this rebuild should be more like a re-fixing of the overall roster.

Just because Jacksonville has all this money doesn’t mean they should spend it willy-nilly. Every move made should be a calculating one that helps build the roster in a better place for direction past 2021.

If these three players are added on massive deals it could be one that ends up, costing the Jaguars more than helping them.

It’s not the Jaguars don’t need a left tackle of the future, they also just need an affordable one. Kim Robinson could be brought back on a prove-it deal after mixed results in 2020. Jacksonville also could franchise tag him to see if he’s better suited with Meyer’s system.

Alas, if Robinson leaves in free agency, Jacksonville will be starting fresh. Why not go for one of the best names at the position.

Williams thrived in his lone season with the 49ers after sitting out in Washington for 2019. He allowed only 17 total pressures and gave up two sacks on the year helping San Francisco remain in the race for the NFC West until the end. During the stretch, Williams did not allow a sack for eight games. He also allowed only three pressures in that same period.

There’s no denying that even at 32, Williams is still a top left tackle in the game. He’s going to want to be paid like one as well. And while helping Lawrence in pass protection sets will be essential, or the Jaguars really going to give up that much money for one player?

The 2021 NFL Draft is loaded with talent at the tackle position. Jacksonville could take a risk by adding a name on Day 2 or potentially overpay for a veteran tackle. Williams also likely wants to play for a contender, a spot that Jacksonville is not in just yet.
