The Bears should avoid signing these three free agents.

The 2020 season was quite the ride for the Chicago Bears, who got off to a hot start, backed into the playoffs and were embarrassed in New Orleans by the Saints on Wild Card weekend. That result was good enough to guarantee another year for Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace but there are still major concerns in Chicago.

With a key question at quarterback among many needs, the Bears will have to retool their roster without the benefit of a ton of salary cap room. Chicago is currently projected to be over the salary cap, meaning they will have to make some cuts before making decisions about whether to retain Allen Robinson or improve various areas of need. Let’s look at three free agents the Bears should avoid in that case, beginning with offensive guard Brandon Scherff.

There is no question that the Bears need help along the interior of their offensive line but going after Scherff isn’t the right fit. Scherff is a very talented player and will command a ton of money in free agency, a luxury the Bears can’t afford when they have so many holes to fill on their roster.

Even if Pace deems Scherff a worthy expenditure his injury history is a strong reason to stay away from a big-money contract. This is an area where the Bears can address their need for an interior lineman with a lower-cost free agent or a mid-round draft pick.
