It’s your board, bet it

C-bet more than GTO suggests when you have range advantage, so says Bencb of RaiseYourEdge.

When in doubt, bet the boards that are good for you!

In most situations, after three cards come on the flop, one player will have an advantage and one will not.

Who has the advantage is determined by which player has more hands in their range that connect favorably with the flop. This is known as having the “range advantage.”

For example, if you raise Under the Gun and the Big Blind calls, and the flop is AKQr, you have the range advantage.

You can have AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQ or KQ, while your opponent likely would have 3-bet with many of those hands preflop.

C-bet more than GTO tells you

Bet at a high frequency when it’s your board

Many players at low/midstakes don’t even know whether they have the range advantage or not.

So, when you have the stronger range on the flop, you can c-bet even more than GTO tells us to!

This is because your opponents will rarely notice that you’re exploiting them and will tend to over-fold when they don’t have anything.

This tactic will literally print you money in some situations where your opponents are just not meeting the Minimum Defence Frequency required.

When you hit a favourable flop for your range, not only should you be c-betting at an extremely high frequency (sometimes 100%), but you should be sizing up a bit larger than you might be used to.

You want to give your opponent every reason to let go of their hand on the flop.

You can mix these larger bet sizings between value hands as well as bluffs, because your opponents will be much less likely to check-raise you with bluffs.

If they aren’t going to punish you for it, might as well bet big!

Capitalise on population mistakes

Aggression is the key to success

Now, at first it might be a little uncomfortable to c-bet big with a crappy backdoor draw on a favourable board for you.

However, you will quickly start to notice that some opponents will simply keep check/folding to your aggression, allowing you to easily capitalize and scoop the pot.

Long before solvers and GTO, aggressive poker was the key to success and parts of that strategy work as well now as they did back then.

Incorporating a high frequency c-bet strategy when you have the range advantage is an easy way to capitalise on population mistakes.

While checking out the most popular courses on our dedicated Raise Your Edge page, you should also have a look at their unique interactive studying tool Pairrd that is coming with engaging video quizzes, range drilling and hand review quizzes, all based on the most up to date GTO ranges out there.

An essential part when learning poker is the ability to think in ranges and understand the why behind them. Raise Your Edge does a great job of getting that across to their students, meticulously breaking down ranges and explaining the reasoning behind them.

However, memorising ranges is quite hard, and often the only way to learn is by making enough costly mistakes to see one’s errors. Thankfully, Raise Your Edge provides a powerful tool to circumvent that with Pairrd. editor Barry Carter has reviewed Pairrd and concluded about the merits of the innovative app:

“Pairrd is a unique interactive studying tool that provides something relatively new to the world of poker training, a way to practice spots without having to play them at the tables. It is essentially a dynamic way to make real poker decisions without risking money. Since most of us learn from experience, it’s a natural way to memorise the theory from Raise Your Edge.”
